Amazon fire tablets
Ok I'm much older than my years when it comes to tech and already feel out if my depth with everything

However the missus has an obsession with getting a tablet with a decent screen size (in fairness largely to keep the kids quiet)

So, a fire seems a logical choice in terms of what you get for the price. But am I right in thinking you can't access android stores off it and have to do everything through Amazon? So you can't watch free YouTube videos but have to subscribe to prime instead? Is there a way round this?

Also is alexa actually any good? Looking at getting some sonos speakers but have no idea how you hook all this stuff together (other than trying lots of nob wiping obviously)

Any advice or experience with these products gratefully received

Cheers

Alexa is the the best £50 tech item you can buy I reckon. Get some xiaomi yee bulbs and you can control your lights at a fraction of the Phillips hub price. Get ifttt app and you can set a ton of controls for your smart devices. Use it for your google calendar, timers, reminders, news, radio and for £3.99 a month unlimited music.

Amazon fire is the best £40 you can spend on a tablet I reckon. Pay a tenner more and it comes as free. Pay £99 and you get unlimited guarantee of the kids break it.

It does everything a kid will need and is cheap as chips. Set up profiles for them and control their usage and they won’t be able to buy anything etc. The ads are only when you switch it on and only for related digital stuff. Pay £5.99 a month for a family account and the kids can access any book, game, video, app etc they want. No risk of unauthorised spending.

Your missus asking for a tablet of 'a decent size' because you are 'out of your depth'??

C'mon mate, she's not asking for a tablet, is she?

You got any black fellas live near you? If so I'd keep an eye on her if I were you!

Re: Amazon fire tablets
There is a youtube app for the kindle, and it's not that difficult to get the google play store on there too, just google it, loads of step by step instructions out there.

had one for over a year, almost indestructible.

It plays all the old console emulator games too, so hook it up with a bluetooth controller and it's a great portable games machine . .

Sniper, better to spend a bit more and get something decent. I bought one last year and have hardly used it. Waste of money unless you are devoted to everything amazon.

Cheers miike

They're so much cheaper than others just seem a little too good to be true!

Re: Amazon fire tablets
sniper, KD makes a good point that Amazon infest the tablets with their own pre-loaded apps and there's very little way of avoiding or deleting them. it's a bit like the way many Android phones now are destroyed by the overpowering umpteen Google apps they that fuck your memory and can be very intrusive. I've had the same kindle though for almost three years now and the battery's still good and its never played up, so I think they're worth buying but just make sure to put the child lock in place in regard to purchasing on apps or through the Amazon store

Good build quality, more than enough for the kids

Alfs

How does that work then? I thought access was restricted? Or can you access through a browser just not through an app?

Alexa is great

Get some bulbs from xiaomi and you can control all your lights. Pay £3.99 a month and you get unlimited music, synth your gmail account and add diary entries and set reminders, get the IFTTT all and set up loads of automated things around your phone and Alexa. Best thing for £50 you can buy in the tech world I reckon.

Re: Amazon fire tablets
Sick of kids breaking £400 iPads so paid £40 each and bought them both one.

For £5.99 a month they have access to everything in the kids section. Books, films, games etc. More that enough to keep em happy. You don’t have to pay for anything but it makes it easier.

You can set time limits easily enough and chuck in an SD card and you can increase storage.

They are tough and the kids love them for just messing around on. They don’t miss watching kids inbox toys on YouTube which turned them into zombies. They like having control and flicking brought books etc

Re: Amazon fire tablets
I got my missus and two daughters one and think they're excellent value for money. You can access the internet so yes to Youtube and any other site. I've not used Alexa so can't comment on that.
